Happy New Year!

I wanted to continue my tradition of a post on the first day of the new year.  I usually post on the last day of the old year but I guess it's too late now!  Anyway, I don't even have pics to post.  We did have Phil and his girls, and Jordan over for a late lunch today.  I somehow got roped into taking call  for this holiday and of course worked this morning,  so we moved lunch to 3 o'clock.  Our tradition is to have pork and sauerkraut, and black eyed peas.  So we grilled ribs and I also made sure there were other dishes to choose from since the peas aren't a huge love for all of us!  I usually bake Greek New Year's bread that contains a coin inside. Whoever finds the coin will have good luck for the year. (As long as they don't accidentally eat it! Ha!)  Well, I found a recipe for Greek New Year's cake that is baked with a coin inside. Same concept but much quicker to make!  Since I worked yesterday too it was the perfect way to continue this tradition.  Guess who won this year...again...ME!  Phil called "foul play" since I was the baker but I swear I have no idea where the coin will end up!  So I'm hoping it comes true for good luck all year.  I promise I will spread it to one and all!   I do hope it's a good year for our country and for us.  I hope good health finds everyone and the adventures that will follow in the next months will be fun and interesting.  This is a year of decision and changes for Jack and I.  Will I retire at the end of 2019?  It's been a plan but I'm a bit nervous about it.  I've worked my whole life and I've been in the operating room since I was 18 with only a few years of absence for having a kiddo. 48yrs sure flew by fast.  Jack will probably continue to work but that's his decision. I'll support whatever he wants to do.  Do we stay at the Pines?  6 acres is a lot to take care of.  Do we need such a big house for just us..and Arnie?  Can we give up the peace and quiet out here?  Well, it will be a journey for sure and in the past I've picked a phrase or a word to follow in the new year. One year I had chosen: "Just because you think it, doesn't mean you have to say it"...that didn't work too well!  This year I've chosen the word "Free".  Free from burdens, free from trying to change things I have no control over, free from being at a corporations beck and call, free to choose how to spend my day.  We'll see how this one works out!  No resolutions, just some goals that we started on last year and will try super hard to complete this year.  Looking forward to challenges that keep us active and moving forward....Happy New Year everyone! Oh wait! I found a photo moment I forgot about:
Now it's a Happy New Year!

We have asked ourselves all those questions. I still have a few more years to work but I am looking forward to it. But we have a big house with 4 acres and pretty quiet here. Do we need it? But we love it here time will tell
Happy New Year!

Hi, YaYa!

Happy new year, dear friend! I think you've hit upon a great new idea for your blog. From now on, all words - no pictures! :) Please don't tell me your camera had a relapse and needed to be rushed back into the hospital! :) I shouldn't tease you because your header picture is striking. Is that the trail that leads to the Yeti's den? Happy new year to him as well!

I never heard of baking a coin into a cake and whomever gets the slice with the coin will have good luck throughout the year. Your tradition reminds me that, five days from now, on January 6, the young men of the Greek Orthodox Church will take part in the annual Epiphany celebration in nearby Tarpon Springs, Florida. No matter how cold the air and water temperatures, youths dive into the Gulf for a cross and the blessing of the waters and the boats - a year of good luck for the boy who retrieves the cross from the bottom.

It seems like you are weighing some major decisions at this stage of the game. I hope you will continue to think of yourself as free to make whatever decisions are right for you. You have surely earned the right to control your own destiny free of pressure. I wish you and Jack, Arnie, your mom and sister, your sons and brothers and all the grandkiddos a safe and happy 2019, and thank you very much for your continued support of Shady's Place!

Bless you, dear friend YaYa!

Happy New Year to you and your family!! Lots of decisions to be made over the next year! We're facing the same thing with hubby turns 66 in June, does he retire? Does he wait a bit? He definitely doesn't want to quit working, just work somewhere different than he is working now. We have heard "horror" stories of people who have retired than a few months later they pass on. Not that it always happens, but makes you think you need to keep something on the fire so to speak to be somewhat productive, but of course with all your interests, you will always be productive, working outside the home or not. I know a few years back when looking at houses to buy, we knew at that stage of our life we didn't want super big to maintain nor did we want a house with stairs. I think your word "free" is a good one to try to work on in 2019. I'm announcing more word of the year in my next blog post in the next day or two.

May it be a great year for you!

Retirement is a big step. I retired at 59 after 33 years. It was an involuntary separation where I could retire and take a buyout or hang on and most likely get laid off without a package.
At that point it was a no brainer for me.
Not going to work after 48 years will take some getting used to.
You need to have a hobby or interest. Sleeping late those first few weeks is great but it got old for me quickly.
All the best this year.

Not severe retirement but when you retire! Although severe retirement sounds like a support group for senior citizens! Ha!

Retirement at 72 takes a bit of getting used to but it's easier than I thought. I go to bed late and get up late...
Like you, I've always been busy all my life. Retiring in the winter is not the best time for me though. In the summer, I would be outdoors all day until dark, in good weather.

I think you've earned your retirement. We can't choose when we are born and when we die but maybe we can choose when we retire...
Happy New Year Yaya.
Hugs, Julia

I retired at 58 with health issues. My husband just retired 6 mo. ago at age 68. It is a good decision. We hang out with our teen gr-daughters, can take a trip whenever we feel like it.

Hi, YaYa! As usual I'm behind on my blogging...both writing & reading. At any rate, HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours:) So...you are thinking of retiring...DO IT! I can tell you that I don't think there is anybody around that had a harder time deciding to retire than me! In my 30th year of teaching (which is for many the last), I had absolutely no thoughts of retiring. I began my 31st year with no thoughts of it either. Then about Oct. we had a meeting about lots of new standards and "stuff" coming down the pike and my brain immediately said, "It's time to go. No more new tricks for this old dog." I had prayed often that God would let me know when it was time and I figured this was it. From Oct. to June I prayed and cried!!! Literally! I knew it was the right thing to do but I wasn't sure I was ready. But I retired in June from my classroom. I was fortunate enough for the next 10 years to work part time in the field of education, but it was very different from having my own classroom. I still miss teaching...miss it every day...but retiring was the right thing for me to do. It has given me the time needed for me to help with my grandkids and do other things I needed to do. Plus it's really nice not to have to set an alarm clock everyday:) Well, sorry for this long comment but just wanted to share my experience in hopes it will help you make your decision. HAPPY NEW YEAR...hope 2019 blesses us all with many happy adventures:)
