Say Yes To The Dress

Tomorrow is my wedding anniversary. 36yrs. Whew, a long time for someone to put up with me! I was thinking about all those wedding dress reality shows. I just shake my head when they mention the budget some of the woman have for the dress. $5,000, $10,000 and up?! Heck, my first car I bought off the lot only cost $3,800, and it lasted a lot longer than most marriages! What made my wedding dress so special was the fact that my Mom made it for me. We went and I tried on different styles, and then she made a pattern of what I liked. An a-line with lace and hand beading. I loved it! It may have lost a bit of it's shine today, but I still think it's just beautiful. The style in 1974 was a bit more modest than the ones today. I don't think I would have been allowed to wear a strapless number in the Church back then. Having all boys, the dress will probably never be worn again, but it will wait softly in storage, reminding me of all the love and time that was put in it by my wonderful Mom! When Jack saw me taking pics of it he asked if I was going to try it on. Smart ---! Well, I love ya anyway honey, and I'm glad you still love me even though I'm not the same size I was back then..see how your investment has grown?? Here's to another 36yrs! (I think Jack just fainted!)

Mom not only did the dress, but the head piece and also all the bridesmaids and the flower girl's dresses. I think my Sis helped with those. Sewing was never something I wanted to do. My sister is a fab seamstress.
Two years later my Sister asked my Mom to make her dress. She wanted her to crochet it. I thought she was crazy because the wedding was in July. All I could think of was heavy crocheted scarves! Well, I was wrong. It was beautiful. The thread was very fine and it took special needles that my Dad made for Mom to use. Neither of my Sister's daughters wore that dress, but her oldest did wear it for a vintage fashion show. Both our dresses mean much more to us than if we had bought one at the store. It's something we both cherish to this day.

Happy Anniversary! In this day and age, this is quite the accomplishment! Those dresses are awesome, and I hope that somewhere along the way someone else will get to wear them...maybe a granddaughter? But even if they don't, the sentiment will always be there, as well as the warmth of memories when you pull it out to look at. I've always envied anyone who has the talent and passion for sewing - I put it up there with being able to play the piano or to dance. But like you, I've never had the desire to do it myself!

Both dresses were beautiful and knowing your amazing, talented mother...I'm not surprised. You look gorgeous in your dress...Larry gave you a wonderful compliment this week, he said that there are three women he has met that were so beautiful that he found them intimidating to talk to, to start with and YOU were one! (I don't think he is any more....)
Happy Anniversary and many more!!!

Your wedding picture and your dress are beautiful!!! My mother made my wedding gown too. Even then they were more expensive than we could afford but my dress was lovingly made and very pretty. Girls around here spend as much as $30,000 on their weddings! It took us several years of marriage before the two of us together even made that much money!!!!! Times were simpler then, weren't they? Girls nowadays would probably die before wearing a gown their mother made!

Congratulations on 36 years. My Mum made my Wedding Dress and all my bridesmaid's dresses and the boy's cumber bands and bow-ties. She really knocked herself out.

We still laugh about the pin she or my brother (who was helping) put into her water-bed mattress (It was the largest, cleanest place to spread out a HUGE amount of snow white fabric), only becoming aware of it at 2am in the morning with sopping sheets! Also she finished my sister's bridesmaid dress the night before. On the day my sister kept putting runs in her (very expensive, French) tights. Upon inspection, Mum, in her tiredness, had sewn the tulle petticoat on inside out. Any movement and the tights snagged. We still tease my sister "What are you doing to your tights!!"

My dress is packed up too. To me it's so precious. Love and memories are packed in along with every fold and frill.

Thanks for a lovely post.

(PS Watch out next April for my 25th Anniversary post!)

What a lovely post! And you are so lucky to have had your mother's hands on that dress of yours. These stories and these memories are not replicated by our children. They don't even know the meaning of hand-made, love stiched. Save it for your grandchild. Hopefully, someone in the future will appreciate it.

It's wonderful that your mom made your dress. And it looks a lot like mine...from the collar to the lacey sleeves. (I was married in the 70s, too.)

=)

PS. My sister was married in a crocheted gown that belonged to the groom's family and was worn by many, many brides. It was gorgeous!
