Howdy September! I hope everyone had a great Labor Day and said a goodbye to summer. I know, I know, we still have 3 weeks until it's officially autumn. But the sun's slant is different. We have trees here starting to turn colors. Our weather has even been in the 40's on a few nights. Halloween decorations are lining the shelves along with candy corn. The wooley bears are out too. They are suppose to predict how winter will be by their color. Brown means mild, black means make sure the snowblower is working! So I saw 2 this week.
Wooley bear #1...mild.Wooley bear #2...bad winter. Seems like they have the same track record as the TV weather guys! On a final note for today, I spied this at Walmart:
Do I need this??? (Please say yes!) No, I didn't buy it. I guess I'll ask what the wooley bears think! Have a good start to the ber months!

I think you should buy the witches I've seen. I have not seen any wooleys yet, but have heard we are in for some snow this year. But maybe they are wrong. Its the only job you can be wrong at...being a weatherman. Janice
Happy September! I haven't seen many (any?) wooly caterpillars yet this season, but your "specimens" are funny. It looks like one is all brown and one all black? Usually they're a combination of both? My mum's science always said the more black bands, the harsher the winter (I could bore you with all the minutia - e.g., more black near the head - winter begins harsh, ends mild; more black near the tail, winter begins mild, ends harsh, etc., etc.) but the science I learned getting my degrees said the width of the bands has more do with how long the caterpillar has been feeding and growing. (To this day, I prefer my mum's science. ;-) ) And, yes, I think you do need the skeletons and coffin. I saw those a few years back in a high-end magazine and seriously considered getting them myself.
