What Was I Thinking?

Did you ever do something that really sounded like a good idea at the time....but then sort of turned into the project from hell?  We've done a few of these projects in our lifetime. When Jack's dad was alive, he and Jack would get into so many "fix-it-upper" projects and Dad's words always made me break into a sweat: "This is going to be easy"..or something similar.  I realized then that there are no easy projects...even small things turn into complicated silly putty.  Secretly I think his Dad enjoyed these the best.  Well, Dad would have loved the "let's go ahead and get the pool up this year" project.  We put up a small 16ft. round pool a few years ago....and took it down at the end of summer and stored it until the next summer. Except last year we didn't do it.  So, I thought it would be nice to put one up again this year, but get a newer version that was a bit sturdier and leave it up all the time. Jack came on board...because he loves me and I now owe him big time!  We purchased the pool and set out to level the pool spot...the same one we've used in the past but was never really quite level.  A 16X48in. deep pool isn't suppose to have a deep and shallow end..who knew?  Well,  that's where the story gets sweaty....as in 90de. and humid with lots of  "skeeters" while digging out the dirt and rocks and leveling, digging some more, leveling, cursing quietly, hauling dirt and enough little rocks to fill our driveway.  All the time I kept thinking...."What was I thinking?"  I didn't even ask Jack what he was thinking...it was all over his face what he was thinking.  Well folks, it's done...almost. The filter isn't connected yet...Oh yeah, I thought a salt water filter system seemed like a good idea.....To Be Continued....notice I have no pics to share...very unusual for me...I will post when it's totally ready...I just need to make sure Jack's at Scout Camp before I take a first swim... in case he decides to drown me!

Hello, dear YaYa! I can certainly relate to this post. My dad was the type of man who loved to tackle challenging projects and he often got in over his head. He was a perfectionist and that meant the work often dragged on and on. When I was a boy he and I worked together building model cars, a glider airplane with an eight foot wingspan, a deluxe bird house designed to attract Purple Martins and a patio, deck and basketball goal outside our house. Our family also had one of those large above ground pools with a filter. The cost of chlorine, diatomaceous earth, skimmers, floats, toys and other miscellaneous pool supplies was much higher than anticipated and the work involved in leveling the ground and smoothing out the liner was hard and tedious. I'm sure your husband will quickly forget all the blood, sweat and tears involved as soon as the pool is assembled and filled and you guys are splashing around in it this summer. I'm putting in a request right now for pics of Eddy floating on a raft!

You were thinking right with all the hot days ahead. It will be nice to go for a swim when it's too hot to just sit around sweating.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in the pool.

I love your ant table decorations. Just too cute.

I finally started knitting that pink scarf I promised and it's slow knitting as my hands goes numb after a short time knitting but I'll get her done in small increment. I have shoulder problems.

Enjoy your weekend,
Hugs,
JB

Ilove your new picture on the top.
a pool sounds like a good idea but I know how much work it is. We set one up years ago. Many hands help in this project.
enjoy it

LOL Every single project in my house ends up like that. But think how sweet that first swim will feel.

Oh, gosh! Just looking at those pools makes me think they're a ton of work, and then you had to go and add dirt removal ...? (I loved your last comment asking if you were big for your size :)

Over the years, I have learned my lesson (almost) to really think through any ideas I might have because DH will jump on them and start running because he is a project kind of guy. That is how we ended up with an in-ground pool, but I will say this. The day we got to dive in, it was worth it! Looking forward to seeing pics. And I love your new look. Beautiful.

I'm all for the pool. We had a 24x48 when our kids were growing up for about 13 years. The same pool. It kept all the neighborhood kids entertained from morning till night. We loved it. I hated to take it down. But it was well worth it's price and maintenance. Have fun!!

This is a familiar story. We put up a pool when our kids were small. BIG JOB.
Our daughter just put one up and the ground wasn't at all level. They had to have dirt hauled in, gravel, sand. Lots of shovel work!
The pool is in and they love it. So guess it's worth it after all. Just not for me.
I'm too tired! Besides I can now swim in our daughter's pool. Enjoy, Yaya.

Haha, every project I do is one of those that ends up from hell. I think it's just me. But how nice to have a pool at the end of it! mmmmm...

I have a feeling it will be like having a baby - not so much fun going through the process, but what a great gift in the end!

A pool in 90 degree temps sounds so inviting. I'm sure the hard work will be worth it. Sure hope your hubby doesn't drown you, either. LOL!! Maybe you should just wear a life jacket around the house for a couple of days. Or better yet, when he sees you swimming in your bikini, he'll forget all about it.

Ambitious - but aren't we all! And, as has been said, don't all projects end up like that.
