House or Home?

Today Donna (Starkey Hollow), and I went on the annual Bath, Ohio home tour. The places you visit are really amazing and can take your breath away. Some, like this one, are very big..and inside it was so cute and we loved it the best. It just had the cutest curtains, and framed pictures, and furniture, and every nook and cranny had something fun to look at. We hated to leave! It felt like a home, not just a decorator's house on display. She was a dog lover and it was easy to tell by many of the items inside. I wish I could have taken pictures, but cameras weren't allowed. Only the outside could be shot. So you'll have to take my word for it and believe me when I say all the places were lovely, but some were ones you wanted to sit and enjoy, take your shoes off, grab a book and hide in a cozy corner! Some were just houses...some were truly homes...some made me think, "what a great idea!"..some made me a little ill. One of the houses had many levels and windows everywhere with views, that for reason, made me a little seasick feeling. Crazy, I know. When I got back to the Pines, I looked around and thought, "hmmm..not tour worthy, but hey, it's home!"
Some of the homes were down right HUGE! This is only a small portion of the house. It had 10,000sq. ft. on the upper level..and 3,500 on the lower level. It was unbelievable! We did notice it had a maid's quarters too. It would be necessary to have help with all that space.
A local pet rescue group had some puppies on display, ready for adoption, and these little guys were way cute! I did resist, but I bet they were adopted out by the end of the day. It was a nice thing for this family to do to help out this organization. (They also had a couple of kittens)...again, I resisted!
I like to show Jack some of the laundry rooms in these homes...(as he does the laundry here)..this one was the second laundry room as well as housing a second kitchen area.
The inside of the homes were beautiful, but the outside landscapes were just as awesome..many of them had outdoor fireplaces that would be fun to sit around in the fall..or even winter. The owner of this one told us that the pond on the property was great for iceskating in the winter and I would assume they use this fireplace for hot cocoa and roasting marshmellows afterwards...well, that's what I would do with it!
Peaceful ponds like these were so pretty and to be able to sit inside or out and listen to the soothing sound of the water would be so nice.
Thank you Donna, for the fun day!

Those house tours are so much fun. For years, each December, my church organized a Victorian house tour. All the big mansions were decked out for the holidays. It was gorgeous.

Yes, they are most inspiring, aren't they? I always wanted a whole house decorated well and put together by simply wonderful touches. Instead, I gave up, live in a comfortable cottage by the sea that gets cluttered and dirty too often. Yes, we all need a bit of fantasy to get us motivated.

Now, I think I'll declutter the front room after I finish here.

When we lived in Rhinebeck NY I would jump at a chance to take our family to Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park and also Roosevelt's home. I am totally with you about one's love to look at well decorated homes. Yes, also the love for your home is nothing you can compare with.

I was lucky enough to stay in a B@B that was built in 1906 in Winnipeg last summer. I was overwhelmed at is grand and opulent structure. All the houses in the neighborhood were also mansions. Enjoyed it so much.

wonderful post.
than you for sharing yours and Donna's day with us!
glad you had a great time!

Oh I lOVE house tours. I would have had so much fun with you. That big house is amazingly huge. Glad I don't have to clean it. Even with a maid...

Interesting. We have tours here sometimes, mainly what they call "handmade house tours" so people can see houses made with mud bricks or straw bales, so the opposite end of these mansions. It's usually done to raise money for charity. People love to look at homes so it's a great idea. Glad you're enjoying Merrilyn's story - people with kids are starting to tune in each week for story time :-)

It is interesting what makes a place feel like home. I like going to these shows to look at new products, but always come home really loving my own nest.

It sounds like you two had a great time together!

This is so strange. I was just thinking of you and I saw your comment on my blog.
While watching a tv show about Joplin MO and the hospital I could not help but think of people who work in hospitals. An ER nurse was saying how they were so busy with the number of patients that were pouring in, that they did not get a chance to call home to make sure everyone was Ok. The hospital administrator was in tears. I told my husband about how you work in a hospital setting. He said that he is praying on a regular basis for every one who helps people in any way.
Yes, I agree with you about Memorial Day. Surrounded by GIs (very young ones) makes me wonder if wars will ever stop. I am sixty and I don't think I will be able to see the day when there is no one in war with anyone.

I love house tours! That one looks fantastic, loving the outdoor fireplace. You're lucky I wasn't with you though.. I don't know about my will power on the puppies and kittens! x

I love house tours!!! I haven't been on very many, and I think we usually go during Christmastime for the decorations and stuff, but it is so much fun to peek inside other people's homes. You can see some totally wonderful places this way -- without feeling like a stalker.

Those home tours always make me ask...How can anyone afford all this???? Also, how can they keep all this space clean??? Glad you had fun.

Look at Donna just sitting there like "My pleasure!" You two are such cute friends. I love home tours like that - they have so many clever ideas that you can bring home and do on a (much) smaller scale. I'm always amazed at the creativity!

It is very interesting to take such a tour with you. In Russia we have no such tours.
Thank you for sharing your impressions!
