2024 Is Out The Door!

My final post for a lean posting year.  This year has flown by as it seems all do these days and just uttering the numbers 2025 makes me shake my head.  I still can't believe I'm "in my seventies"!  It's been a busy month even with not working as much as previous months.  Christmas came so quickly but these days I've had the chance to sit still for a minute and enjoy the decorations and quiet.  Jack is finally going to be able to close the office door for the last time.  It's taken 3 months to wrap it all up.  He practiced for 47yrs and part of that was with his dad, so clearing out the office also meant clearing out items that were there when Dad was alive.  It's been hard work and emotional work.  His Mom worked there too as the office manager back in the day and there were items there that will always remind me of her.  I got a little teary eyed as I vacuumed up the rooms.  We filled a dumpster, took furniture to a church mission, sold some things and gave much away.  His patients will miss him.  He had 4 show up yesterday and since he still had an adjusting table available, he took care of them.  One of his patients showed up this morning as we were cleaning because they saw his van in the lot and he hoped to get an adjustment.  We chatted for a bit but had no equipment left to do anything.  Yep, this chapter probably goes as the hardest part of this year for Jack, but we're hoping for new adventures in 2025.  Yesterday I did take time to make my Greek New Year's bread.  It's called Vasilopita and it's baked with a coin inside.  When it's cut on New Years, whoever gets the coin in their slice will have good luck for the year.

I made enough for us and one for a neighbor down the street and one for my BFF Donna.  I wish everyone a very happy and healthy new year even if you don't get the coin in your slice of life tomorrow!  2024, you're out the door!

I can certainly relate to the head-shaking. Hard to believe isn't it? I was just thinking about all the hoopla that accompanied Y2K...and that that was q quarter of a century ago. 😳 I can only imagine the emotions Jack (and you) have gone through - and, on many levels, will continue to go through, with the closing of the practice. But what an incredible testament to him and his skills and care that patients still tried to get adjustments knowing he was done. Your bread tradition sounds like fun. The only new year ritual we had was my mom believing you needed to eat herring on new year's eve for good luck. I've never heard of that one before but she abided by it religiously. Then again, she loved herring. Me? Not so much. Perhaps that's why my luck has been mostly bad...that is if I've had any at all. Anywho...here's wishing you (and Jack) an amazing 2025...may the adjustments to your new life with Jack's retirement bring unexpected blessings and joys...and may time, somehow, magically slow down. ~Robin~

I can only fathom what you and jack are going through right now. Having a family business and then closing it up is so very hard. We only had our gift shop for 4 years, but it was so sad for me when we left the building for the last time. Now we find out the new owner is just going to tear the building down to expand the parking lot between his store and our antique store. Such a shame but nothing we can do. How fun to bake bread with coins inside and a wonderful tradition. Happy New Year! Here's hoping 2025 will be a better one. Janice

Hi, YaYa!

Happy new year, dear friend!

I can feel the bittersweet emotions you and Jack experienced as you packed up and cleaned out his office and closed his practice. All those patients showing up in the final days for chiropractic adjustments illustrates how well known and respected Jack was in the community.

I remember you baking Greek New Year's bread at the start of other years. I'm sure the Yeti in Creepy Woods would appreciate a slice, even if it doesn't have a hidden coin. A reminder that a few days from now, the Greek Orthodox boys will dive for the cross in the frigid waters of Tarpon Springs in the traditional Epiphany Celebration. It's hard for me to believe I am now living 1,000+ miles away from an annual event that for nearly 40 years was just a short drive away.

I invite you to come see the changes I've made in the look of Shady's Place for 2025. No commenting is necessary on my gag post which is merely intended to call attention to my new header design and sidebar pics and info. Then, I hope you can join me this coming Friday, Saturday or Sunway when I offer my first official post of the year.

Many blessings to you and your wonderful family in the coming year, dear friend YaYa!

SWEET entry. I smiled when I read "24 out the door" NICE! Oh and I know Jack will miss the office. The only advice I ever offer to folks who decide to 'retire' is have something in mind to actually do, or you will get bored LOL I know, I think I have retired 3 times. LOL Wishing you guys the best in the coming year and know Jack will find his nitch.... I hope you and he enjoy his retirement...

Hi Yaya! Wow, that bread look sos good. I know your husband will really be missed. Kind, caring, competent health care professionals always are. BTW - Yes - I think we should figure out how to get your Granddaughter and my son to meet up at BYU - Idaho. :-) And one other thing - the company that I always used to print my blog and make it into a book went out of business! I was so bummed. Have you found a new company to use to print yours. Email me through the link on my blog. Happy New Year to you and your family!

I just saw Deb's comment above about the blog book printing company going out of business. She must have used the same one I did....and I would definitely like to know too if you know of a different one! Please!
