I know all the folks who love summer will be sad with this cool weather we've been having. If I still had my pool, I would also be a little bummed. But I'm an autumn gal and being able to go out and enjoy a sweater day or sweatshirt walk in the woods makes me happy. It's been a hot and humid summer and because of that our apples seem to be a bit earlier than usual. I've been picking them this week, and I've froze some and will make applesauce this weekend from what we picked today. One more pick trip will probably finish it off. But after picking we took a stroll to the Creepy Woods to see what branches came down and how much we need to saw up and move. Annabelle loves to walk up there.
While we were picking, she was looking longingly up at the woods.
Please YaYa, can't we go now?First we pick, then we walk!We got a good bounty this year. What's this you ask? Oh, just the ground hornet nest I stumbled upon and got stung from last week! Ouch, it hurt! This dude is dead and hopefully the group of them down there are gone too. They are not pollinators so I don't feel bad about their demise. My knee that swelled up and my ankle that hurt like the dickens didn't feel bad about that either. If you zoom in, his face looks demonic! Gives me the chills! But then we hiked up and made Annabelle's day.

Enjoyed the trip but OUCH on the inground Hornets. Never seen that before and hope I never do. HOrnets are on m mind because they are clearing the lot next door and knocked a big nest down. They are still around, evidently not finding a new spot yet. Anyway enjoyed the visit and it is getting a little cooler here too....
I am also loving the cooler temps. Fall is my favorite season. Annabelle is so sweet. So glad you were able to get lots of apples for your sauce and that hornet did look like a demon. Janice
Those ground hornets are everywhere here! It is hard to find the hole to get rid of them. Apple picking sound nice but early.

I can almost smell your apples waiting to be processed. To me, that is one of the signs that fall is truly here. It has gotten very cool here too...lows in the (very) low 40's and highs barely reaching 60ΒΊ, but the forecast says there's to be warming the next few days - at least for one last fling for the holiday weekend. How I love your Creepy Woods. I so wish I had a place like that to walk. I'd be like Annabelle begging and waiting to go. Those ground wasps are nasty. I've had a few too many here of late. I also have the paper nest wasps the past few years. I used to just have the kind that built honeycomb nests under my eaves and we co-existed perfectly fine. They were very docile and wouldn't harm you unless you stepped/sat on them. The past two years they've gone (after 35+ years!) and those nasty, aggressive, ones have moved in. It's bad when even fellow wasps leave the neighborhood. In any event, happy holiday weekend!
Nothing beats turning a day of harvesting into a warm, delicious memory for winter. Enjoy your applesauce-making—and the cozy reward that comes after! ππ✨
