2017 And The Magic Food
Happy New Year! Along with this greeting usually comes the question of what did you do for New Year's Eve. Then sometimes the topic of traditional food or rituals that are suppose to ward off "Bad Luck" comes up in conversation. I even wrote about ours yesterday. Along with the coin bread we always have pork and sauerkraut and black eyed peas. That's something I did after marriage. Somehow I lived my life before without the magic of pork. Let's be honest here, it's not that lucky for the pig! Anyway. we do it every year. Do we really believe it will bring good luck? Welllllll.....I'm afraid to find out. So I make the food, eat just one black eyed pea, cut the bread with the coin and take a deep breath because somehow I just feel better afterwards. Oh, and to make it even sweeter, guess who found the coin?
Drum roll please....dddddddddddddddrrrrrrrrrr.......me! First time ever! I'm on a roll so maybe I need to go get a lottery ticket and enter a few contests. I don't know about you, but I believe in magic food!!

Usually Mrs. S makes pork and sauerkraut for us on New Year's Day, but this time she made us a wonderful meal consisting of lobster tail, crab cakes, corn on the cob and asparagus. It was delicious but I didn't find any money as I was eating. :) I'm glad you were the lucky one who found the coin this year. Only thing better would have been a $100 bill! :)

Growing up my mom would make pork chops and sauerkraut on New Year's Day for luck. She would put lima beans in the sauerkraut so it wouldn't be too bitter. Delicious! I believe in comfort food myself :)

The only tradition Jo and I have is to sit down and relax together watching a film on the lead up to midnight. We used to put a silver threepenny bit or sixpence in the Christmas Pudding but I suspect that would be frowned upon by the modern health and safety addicts!

As we age, our new year starts pretty tame as we are already tired of all the hoopla about the Holidays. We had pork loin, broccoli and rice for dinner.

Happy New Year! I believe in magic food too. Down south it's pork, cabbage, black eye peas, cornbread. I added mac and cheese, brownies, and pecan pie. I too felt relieved that I ate what I was suppose to to have a prosperous new year. Congrats to getting the coin in your slice of bread. We'll be doing the baby in the king cake starting in a few weeks and lasting a month till Mardi Gras. We eat way too many king cakes during the Mardi Gras season. The one who gets the baby has to provide the next king cake , sometimes they provide it the very next day. Mardi Gras is on my birthday weekend so my bday cake will be a king cake. Wonderful beginning for the New Year ! I am sure you make very tasty dishes besides the magic food. Your writing is also very inspirational. Lottery is not my cup of tea, but who knows you might win something big.
